Outreach Ministry Group

Our 2008 goals contain a spectrum of mission opportunities including but not limited to: Concern for others locally, district-wide, national, and internationally

  • Initiate “pounding,” increasing our food pantry and supporting St. Paul’s UMC’s pantry

  • Support educational and health needs for local Native American tribes that the Virginia Conference supports

  • Increase involvement in youth-involved projects such as Appalachia Service Project, and Brazil “Shade and Fresh Water Project”

  • Increase adult participation in United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM), especially Gulf Coast efforts

  • Educate the congregation about the latest information pertaining to HIV/AIDS and how we may minister to this part of our local community

Adult Mission Trip
Community will be sending a team of adult volunteers to the Gulf Coast for the Katrina recovery or we may form a team to help with the recovery from this fall and winter tornados in Tennessee  and other areas of the eastern United States. If you are interested in going please contact Paul Steele at psteele4@cox.net

CUMC Food Pantry
We have initiated the “pounding” concept for the fourth Sunday of each month throughout the year. We are asking for each family to bring in 1 pound of nonperishable food items to supply our food pantry. Our church office often receives requests from families in need. Each month we will rotate the food in our panty and send any excess goods to St. Paul’s UMC food pantry and other Outreach partners.

Native American Indians
We have initiated the support for the educational and health needs for local Native American Indian tribes by appropriating funds from the Lenten/Easter offering. In addition, some of the members of the Outreach group will be visiting the Mattaponi Healing Eagle Clinic to observe what they do and to establish a relationship. The medical staff is educating the people on prevention, and they plan to build a fitness center near the reservation very soon.

St. Paul's Food Bank
Every Monday, several of our members go to St. Paul’s UMC to work at their food pantry. They do everything from collecting the donated food from Food Lion, to stocking the shelves and refrigerator, to bagging food items. As they are giving out the food they take time to talk to and perhaps minister to persons in need. If you are interested in this “hands on” ministry, please contact the church office. You do not need to participate every Monday; whenever you can help will be greatly appreciated.

Appalachia Service Project
“Making Homes Warmer, Safer and Drier. Transforming Lives”  is what the Appalachia Service Project is all about. ASP serves the mountainous region where Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia come together. Each year volunteers from across the United States participate in ASP, providing home repair assistance to families in need. For more information about ASP read the organization web site.

Adults and youth from Community UMC volunteer to take part in this mission and service of helping hands. It is also a time for us to step out of our comfort zone and spend a week learning new life skills while getting to know people who do not live in our area or economic environment. We learn to repair homes and build relationships. Community's weeks of service this summer are June 28-July 5 and July 19-26.

Susanna’s Clothes Closet
The clothes closet has had requests for new or gently used winter coats for school-aged children. As always, we are in need of new underwear and socks for the kids as well. Please bring contributions to the clothes closet or office clearly marked. Checks are always acceptable and should be clearly marked "clothes closet."
