The UMM started out a men's club in the 50's with Jim Williams as it's president. They were active in visiting patients at the Norfolk Community Hospital on a weekly basis. They visited new members and prospective members. One of the first projects was to provide each classroom with a piano. They met every Saturday morning for a prayer breakfast. In 1975 Reverend Rose and lay leader H. S. Abernathy made reactivating the men's fellowship a priority. In April 1976, the UMM reorganized with presiding President Tom Rollins. Many traditions were started by this group including; the Sweetheart Banquet, Oyster Roast and the Steak Cookout with the Scouts. In the past few years, the UMM have been extremely active with missions. UMM members have traveled to Tennessee three separate times to build a community center, two trips to a prison halfway house in Blackwater resulted in much needed building maintenance and the latest effort has been the Habitat for Humanity House project spear headed by CommunityUMC. |
